Six Years Later, My Resume Has the Opposite Problem
In 2020, I was an entrepreneur and sales leader trying to break into a technical role. I would not have guessed that six years later I would have the exact opposite problem.
Back then, I made a bet on myself: spend the next five years building real technical acumen, then find the role where I could bring it together with sales and sales management. I worked the plan. Now I am applying for Security Solution Area Specialist and Account Executive roles, and the technical investment comes through more clearly than the sales and management experience I built it to support.
So far, I have not made it to an interview.
I call whatever lives between Submit application and Thank you for your interest the Decepticon. I have no idea what happens in there. I do know that it sent me back to the document.
This time I reviewed the resume against the jobs I am actually pursuing. I looked at what a hiring manager would see in the first screen, which experience received the most space, which terms were easy to find, and what the document made them work to discover.
Then I rebuilt the resume.
What the review found
The old first screen identified me as a Senior Security Solution Engineer and immediately listed 20 certifications. Education and certifications came before experience. That was a strong technical introduction.
It was also incomplete for the roles I was targeting.
Stay Fit CLT, Paychex, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, and the Army National Guard were compressed into four one-line entries under "Other Experience." A recruiter could see technical depth quickly, but finding the 40-plus-person team, P&L responsibility, business ownership, and military service took more work. G-Net had a full entry, but its prospecting, territory development, and sales process were easy to miss inside the paragraph.
The document also made commercial terms harder to find. The experience was there, but the words connected to the roles I am pursuing were either buried in paragraphs or absent from the one-line entries.
The career itself was not missing. The hierarchy was telling the wrong version of it.
Once I marked up all three old pages, the problem was hard to miss. The opening looked backward, the certifications took over, two headings were split from their descriptions, and the sales and leadership work I needed recruiters to see had been pushed into "Other Experience."
Three old pages, marked up. Two new pages, rebuilt.
Red notes are my 2026 review. Historical wording and dates stay as they appeared in the application document.

What I can actually say about the Decepticon
Microsoft's published hiring lifecycle puts Application review between Submit application and Interview. The company says its structured interviews evaluate real skills against a role's requirements. The Microsoft Careers search site also says that it uses Eightfold AI and that Microsoft applies human oversight and judgment when using the technology.
That is more useful than applicant-tracking folklore, but it does not reveal a secret score. I found no public Microsoft source that describes a universal keyword threshold, an automatic rejection rule, or the order in which recruiters see applicants. The Decepticon could include matching technology, knockout questions, recruiter review, role fit, timing, or all of them.
The practical move is to read the exact posting and use its language where my experience supports it. Across the roles I am pursuing, I am checking for two groups of terms:
- Security Solution Area Specialist: solution selling, customer security transformation, Zero Trust, cloud security, threat protection, customer discovery, opportunity identification, partner collaboration, and business outcomes.
- Account Executive: account planning, executive engagement, opportunity creation, pipeline management, revenue growth, digital transformation, account-team orchestration, and industry expertise.
My resume already supports solution selling, discovery, security architecture, Zero Trust, cloud security, partner engagement, healthcare industry experience, prospecting, territory development, P&L management, and people leadership. My current role contributes to opportunities, but that is different from claiming direct AE account ownership, forecasting responsibility, or a revenue number I personally carried from plan through close. Those remain evidence gaps, so I left them out.
The rewrite gives the review stage a cleaner record to work with. The opening names the combination I am pursuing. Every employer has its own title, dates, and evidence. Commercial results appear before the certification inventory, and the technical bullets explain how the work moved a customer or team. The revised resume also lists 22 current certifications, including two added after the old version, and corrects the Paychex and Enterprise date ranges.
This does not promise an interview. It stops asking software or a person to assemble the strongest version of my career from scattered clues.
The shoe is still on the other foot
In 2020, I needed technical hiring managers to see more than a sales background. I labbed, studied, taught, earned degrees and certifications, and took the hard support roles that let me prove I could cut it.
Six years later, I need commercial hiring leaders to see what all that technical depth was built to support.
There is some sweet irony in that. I spent years making sure nobody could dismiss me as "just a sales guy." I may have made the case a little too well.
The new resume shows the whole bet.
